General Odierno on the Minimum PT Standards

March 16, 2014

On January 30th, 2014, General Ray Odierno, the Chief of Staff of the Army, was interviewed by Conan O’Brien about the requirements for joining the US Army. General Odierno mentioned obesity, lack of high school graduation, and a criminal record as things that could bar enlistment. However, when Conan asked the General about the physical fitness standards, the GEN Odierno’s reply was a bit… off…

GEN Odierno listed these as the maximum PT requirements:

You'd have to run about a 10:50 two-mile.
You would probably have to do 90 push-ups in 10 minutes.
And you would do 70 to 80 sit-ups in two minutes.

And these as the minimum:

The minimum standard would be 50 or 60.
And then you would have to run about two miles in about 14 minutes.

If you check the Score Table, you’ll see those numbers are pretty far off. The hardest run standards, which are for 17-21 year old males, show that a 13:00 two mile will get you the maximimum score and a 15:54 two miles yields the mimimum points needed to pass.

So, is GEN Odierno such a PT stud that he doesn’t even care about the real scores or do generals just not take the test?
